We are born, we live, we die. That is the nature of life.

The question here is: Are we really living, or are we existing?

Some people might not understand my terminology, so I will explain.

'Existing' is just living day to day: get up; go to work if you have a job; come home; and finish the day out in front of the TV or what have you. Basically, fast paced with no time to really enjoy living.

'Living', on the other hand, is really taking the time to enjoy life to the best of your ability. It means, taking time out and 'absorbing' the things around you. Reflecting on their individual beauty.

Step outside, on your balcony, deck, porch, or yard...and really "look" at what is around you. See the flower or blade of grass for it's beauty and purpose. Enjoy it! Listen to the sounds of laughter, or birds...watch them...marvel at them. Smell the air...be thankful that it's there...and all that it does for us on this planet. If you can, touch a flower, the bark of a tree...even a brick on a building and just reflect on its creation and purpose. FEEL everything...that is "living".

Each day, 'live', 'laugh' and 'love'...and never take a moment for granted. Be thankful for every moment of every day, be thankful you are alive. Enjoy your life...just don't 'exist'.

And finally...teach your children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews well. Teach them to love and cherish all forms of life. This is what it is here for!

Thanks for reading!

  2. Hi Deb,
I wish more people thought about life like this and ask themselves whether they are living or just existing. This morning on my walk I saw this little grey bird on the ground, it didn't look very attractive until it flew off and the white trim on its spread out tail feathers were revealed. I marveled at God's ingenuity for thinking to adorn this little creature with beauty and I thought - how could people even think that such a thing can evolve and not be designed by an intelligent Creator?

Before I was born again I simply existed, since receiving the indwelling Holy Spirit I can say with confidence I am alive!! For me the difference between simply existing and actually living lies in our 'life purpose.' Let me explain.

Recently I asked someone who is established, house paid for, nice car, money in the bank, well educated, apparent social climber - therefore, established by the world's standards. This person had asked me where I saw myself in 5yrs. As a Christian who do not plan her life like that (so I can leave place for God's plan in and for my life) I couldn't just say this to this person who is a science fan and not interested in religion, especially Christianity.

I asked them what their 'life's goal' was and they were stumped. They had never thought about that. That to me is someone who simply exists. Even though they had accomplished so many things in their life - they did not have a goal for their life!! Of course they asked me what mine was and I said it's simple. To complete the work God has for me to do here so that when I'm made to stand before Him on my day of judgement, I can do so without shame and with great joy. That stumped them too. :)

God is amazing. My definition of living is having an intimate relationship with the living God. Fulfilling His will for my life - literally living life in His presence. My definition of existing is the opposite. A life live without God in it. A life live in pursuit of one's own happiness without God - that's my definition of an unfilled life too.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As you can see, it has set the mental wheels in motion for me. :))

    God bless you,

    M
